The most fascinating technique to help get us out of self-critic

I created these last week.

My teacher, artist Susie Raz has the most fascinating technique to help get us 'out of self-critic. She set up a bouquet and asked us to paint them twice, at the same time; yup at the same time!

The multi-tasking of focus kept me out of my head as I danced between the two paintings, out of self-judgment as I bounced my perspective between the two pages and the bouquet. My inner reservoir of creativity was more accessible Suzie taught us when our fear was not in control.

It was so interesting but I really did not judge the pieces until they were up in her hands when we did a show and tell at the end of the session. At that point, I experienced pride and happiness. No frustration, no irritation, no 'I wish I was better', no 'what will people think' - very different from my usual narrative when creating something.

What lessons can we take from this about continuous shifting between angles on our focus to allow for a more enjoyable process?

Here are some examples that I've thought of...

➤ concurrently switching our focus between shorter-term and longer-term impacts on our health or well-being behaviours

➤ concurrently shifting our focus between our message and the connection we can make with our audience in a presentation.

➤ concurrent awareness of compassion and clarity in a difficult conversation

Can you see how this would be useful to you? It was a fascinating tool I will be stretching my clients to use in coaching too.

And...I can highly recommend the course I am doing called, 'Exploring Your Inner Artist' with Suzie Raz who works out of Hawthorn Artist Society or Beaumaris Art Group. It was a joy to be opened up, not having painted since school.

"This course is not about getting it right, but rather about finding your own artistic language through experimenting and liberating your innate creativity through various techniques and exercises and by providing a supportive environment" Suzie Raz
