How focused on agility are you? It will save you from toxic busyness.
As the world is busy course correcting 'post' pandemic, it seems we must focus on agility not speed to protect ourselves and our performance.
We are so habitually attached to doing more faster. However, the future requires us to be more considered and reflective, making iterative changes to the way we think and be. High performance requires us to have our eyes open, to our behaviour when we are alone and when we are together.
In a workshop I ran last week, here are some outputs when thinking of the difference between 'unconscious busy' and 'conscious agility'.
Productive and efficient work is the outcome of agility.
The focus of agility is being flexible in mind, conversation, and behaviour.
Agility is a super leadership skill and you can check yourself by asking:
How often do you/we admit we’re on the wrong track and change direction?
How often do I/we review where we are at with a mind to course correct?
How often do I/we admit we were wrong?
How often do I/we question our decision?
How often do I/we check who is involved in a meeting and whether it is necessary for progress for all to be involved?
How do I/we check my habits to ensure they are still working for me?
How often do I/we consume new or contradictory research?
How often do I challenge the thinking in the room for different ways to work or action?
Conscious agility requires small, iterative movements that allow for progressive, nuanced, collaborative work. This will save us from the frenetic, hurried, overwhelming, never-ending and always unsatisfying state of busyness.
