How to max your psychological safety in virtual working

How lovely is it getting glimpses of people's 'real' life?!

In the last few weeks I've seen babies, children, partners, roommates, cats & dogs (I even saw a mouse this week!), renovations, artwork, bookcases, trophies, gardens and balconies. I love gaining an insight into people's 'real lives'.

Incidental connecting is replacing incidental socialising

Have you noticed the opportunity to create deeper relationships over this period? Discovering more about each other? Gaining insights into who your colleagues 'really' are and what they care about?

Deeper connection is one of the opportunities this blended life is offering us.

What we choose to decorate our walls in our homes, how we deal with stressful situations, what we like on our toast, which of our values are on display right now, what Zoom background people choose and why, how good people are at making aluminium foil hats (yup, I saw that in a team meeting this week!), these are all starting points to help to get know each other more, as people.

What we are lacking in incidental socialising, we are making up for in incidental connecting.

These insights into each other build our opportunity to connect more deeply

When I work with teams who want to push their performance higher by creating more psychological safety and trust, one of the absolute essential learning points for remarkable teaming is increased connections between people. The key, of course, is sharing vulnerabilities, taking risks in letting each other 'in'.

Right now we are being forced into a little bit more vulnerability. There is less 'pomp and ceremony' to hide behind as our worlds blend. There are enormous opportunities for more psychological safety.

As ever I'd love to hear your thoughts on this.
