Harness your fear for high performance
The Good
Fear is designed to protect us. Its function is literally to keep us alive. It keeps us away from failure, from being excluded, from being hurt, from missing out, from being rejected, from being taken advantage of, and from being overlooked. It keeps us close to our values and our purpose. When we work together, it gives us a connectedness to each other or to the task and challenge. It spurs us towards our growth and can signpost our future success and our possible achievements. It motivates us to do our best, be our best, beat our best. It is the source of feeling alive.
The Bad
Where we get a little unstuck by fear is when it starts to mess with our executive functioning, the clever part of our brain. As we approach too much fear we can start to question ourselves repeatedly, doubt what we think, we can push ourselves beyond our boundaries of self-care (putting our goals or others goals above our own self-care). We can inefficiently and distressingly start to ruminate and worry about the past or the future. When we are in the 'adrenaline' phase of fear for too long we can start to get fatigued, highly strung, anxious and unwell. Decisions become hard; conversations don't reveal our true thoughts as we screen our 'truth'; we struggle to keep focused and we spend too much time in our heads judging ourselves (or others). Fear can also make us protective, blocking out others, or their knowledge, even if it could help us.
The Ugly
Fear also has an ugly side. Fear can be divisive, it divides us from each other, dividing us from being able to see our similarities. It can be paralysing, stopping us from doing the things we should or could be doing. Fear can cause us to be defensive or aggressive, causing us to block or deny people or ideas. It can create an armour that is impenetrable causing fear in others, conflict with others, and even a numbing to ourselves.
Know these types so you can turn the bad and the ugly into the good. Harness your fear.
