Imposter syndrome: Focus on the work and not the mask

people-691440_1920.jpg

Doubting our own skills, knowledge, talents or capabilities is something most of us are familiar with.

Feeling fraudulent happens when our external position (our success) outruns our perception of ourselves.

We experience a range of feelings that come from a fear of this gap being exposed.

And what follows is a set of behavioural choices which we assume will protect us from that exposure (listed below).

None of these behaviours are helpful for our performance. None of them.

Given that studies have shown that up to 87% of us experience ‘imposter syndrome’, the fear of exposure and these 'protective' behaviours are very present at work.

Focus on the work and not the mask

The quality of our teaming behaviours rely on us owning our stuff. Owning our fear.

If we can name it and share it, we can move it out the way.

We can focus on the work and not the mask.

Here is a list of common ways we try to protect ourselves from THE FEAR OF EXPOSURE...any of them look familiar?

  • Don’t ask questions (“I should know this, everyone else seems to”)

  • Don’t ask for help (“I should know how to do this”)

  • Don’t tell people you don’t understand (“they’ll think less of me”)

  • Don’t share your thoughts (“they could be wrong”)

  • Don’t speak your truth (“I will reveal too much”)

  • Present as you think others wish (“keep up appearances”)

  • Defend your position (“Otherwise people will see you could be wrong”)

  • Don’t listen to others (“They might expose cracks in your thinking”)

  • Ensure all work is perfect before shown to anyone else (“there can be no mistakes”)

  • Don’t try things you might fail at (“keep to what you know works, otherwise people will see you fail”)

  • Qualification gathering (“If I have that extra qualification, I will feel more complete”)
