The danger of believing the simple straplines our mind creates.
There is enormous skill in simplifying sets of complex information. But when it comes to working out why we do and feel what we do, there is also skill in making sure that we don’t simplify too much.
📢 Simple straplines, or beliefs, are formed in our brains to help us predict in our complicated world. Some I've heard this week from people I work with include, 'I always hate work functions', 'I must always stand out' 'I’m a creative, I come up with the answers', 'I rarely feel confident', 'as a leader I should know'.
📢 At times, these beliefs will be very helpful and explain, predict or direct our behaviour toward the goals we strive for. However, holding on too tightly to the straplines our mind has created can mean we miss the nuances of the 'now'. Our attachment to the strapline can mean we become stuck, playing the patterns our mind predicted, using it to explain or direct our behaviour as opposed to consciously choosing what would serve us or those around us best.
📢 When the strapline 'proves' itself to be true because we experience it, we fix our beliefs even more and reduce our potential range and self-discovery. When the strapline 'proves' itself to be untrue in a given experience, we experience confusion or distress and quickly try to reinstate the strapline by explaining this 'now' away.
💭 We are more complicated than these simple straplines our mind creates. We are different in different circumstances, with different people, and at different points in our lives. Each situation is new, allowing us to grow, learn, change, and be playful in our lives.
🔔 Once you find your simple straplines, see how they determine your understanding, predictions, and choices. Look to see what circumstances cause these straplines to be front and center and when they are quieter to stretch your understanding of self in context. When you hear the strapline front and center, add a moderating word to soften the strapline from being absolute. For example, from 'I am...' to 'I can be...' or from 'I always..' to 'I have in the past'. Look for ways to make room or opportunity for something different to happen in this 'now'.
