Whooah there's a lot of stress about...

It feels almost normal now right? A high level of stress. That can't be right, can it?

Fear isn't necessarily what caused this stress, but perhaps fear is making it worse?

Fear can push us toward unrealistic expectations — saying yes instead of saying no. It can paralyse us from making decisions, it can lead to perfectionism or struggles to let things go, it can make it hard to put up our boundaries favouring putting others first. It can interfere with action and moving forward, and we can get caught in doubt, indecision, in irritability and yup, you guessed it, all this adds to pre-existing stress.

Take stock of where fear adds to your stress

Look for where you:

  • have overcommitted

  • haven't asked for what you need or want

  • spend time worrying about what you should be doing instead of doing the thing you are doing

  • people please rather than keep to your boundaries

  • find yourself caught in decision making and not in action

  • struggle to keep your mind from darting around

  • over-prepare and over pressurise yourself, getting caught in a loop of fear of not being good enough

Fear is a sneaky disguise artist, posing as indecision, perfectionism, frustration, or irritation and it can absolutely be part of our stress.  In fact, the loop can spiral, stress can feed your fear, and fear can feed your stress. So, probably time to stop, learn some management skills, and reevaluate where you can change some of this experience.

In this article in CPA's business magazine In the Black, I spoke to Johanna Leggatt about good stress and bad stress if you are looking for some tools to deal with stress.
